Day 8 - Alice Springs

Busy day of sightseeing in Alice Springs. We started at ANZAC Hill where Australians who have served in all conflicts are commemorated. After looking over the town in the clear morning air we then headed back to the Todd Mall for coffee for the teachers!

On to the Pioneer Women’s Museum and Old Alice Gaol. The Gaol only closed in 1996. There were interactive displays with stories from prisoners and prison workers. Also in the same complex is The Pioneer Women’s museum was the brain child of one woman Molly Clark. After being to the pioneers museum in Longreach she decided women needed a place too! The Museum celebrates all the achievements of women in Australia in all fields. Great place to take our young ladies!

Then to the Reptile show with our guide Lochie. Touching and holding snakes, blue tongues and bearded dragons before meeting Terry the Territorian crocodile. Lots of snakes. Lots of snakes.

Then lunch at the Royal Flying Doctors Cafe before a film and tour of the RFDS. The RFDS and especially the Rev John Flynn changed the way health care, education and spirituality were handled in the bush. Today it is the largest Aerial Health Service in the world.

Also got to see the Albert Namatjira exhibit in the Aruleun Art Centre while we were there. Then to the Beanie Festival! All the locals told us we had to go! What a hoot! Some are amazing works of art! Had fun trying on the more funky beanies before making a fairly boring purchase!

Dinner at the golf club and an early night. On the road at 7am when it will be a balmy 2 degrees for the 5 + hour drive get to King’s Canyon tomorrow.
